In Jewish folklore we find a wonderful mythical town in Poland called Chelm, where all the residents are usually happy, gentle folk who also share another virtue – they are considered fools by everyone living outside of Chelm. But the Chelmites know they are the great sages of the world, the brightest of bright.
Crossing over to the town of Chelm there was a bridge. As the years went by and the bridge aged, cracks started to form and potholes started to appear. Not before long, the potholes deepened and grew. Until one day the hole found its way all the way through the bridge. Soon after, carriages crossing the bridge would get stuck and people began to fall through the hole to their death.
The wise men on the council convened an emergency meeting to discuss this local tragedy and what immediate solutions could be found to stop further loss of life and limb. After hours of deliberation, the wise men exited the council chambers excited to have figured out the perfect solution.
An announcement was made. The wise men of Chelm have decided to build a hospital right underneath the hole in the bridge, so that when people fall down, they will have immediate access to medical care!
This would be funny if it were not so sadly true about our nation’s current debate on gun control. Instead of analyzing the problem properly and looking for effective solutions to the real problems. Politicians, with some help from the national media, find the perfect Chelm solution to the problem, ban “assault weapons” (a term that even the ATF cannot define, not to mention that the vast majority of gun deaths result from handguns. Remember what Jim Brady from the infamous Brady Bill was shot by!).
Of course, anyone thinking logically understands that this is just an emotional attempt at stopping mentally unstable people from committing violent acts, which can be done equally well even without firearms. See what Timothy McVeigh did with fertilizer or the rise in violent crime after the gun bans of England and Australia. And the flip side, like countries such as Switzerland and Israel with plenty of guns and very little violent street crime.
Proclaiming our schools as “gun free zones” will obviously not stop even one committed killer from entering these school grounds and committing mass murder. To the contrary, this is an invitation to them to follow through with their murder, knowing very well, that no armed resistance will be present to stop them.
For the sake of our children, we need to stop this insane “Chelm” mentality and realize that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is having a good guy with a gun.
My final points are that our 2nd amendment has nothing to do with sport or hunting, it was added to the US Constitution for the sole purpose of being a check on our government. “Military style weapons” are EXACTLY what the 2nd amendment had in mind, not handguns or hunting rifles.
And lastly, these rights are not granted to us by that wonderful historic document, but by God himself. For those out there that haven’t read the Declaration of Independence lately, I quote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The right to defend my life against a potential attacker is endowed by my creator and is unalienable regardless of what the legislators and media say!
[ps Let's see how long our political class would last without armed security...oh wait, we tried that in Libya!]
