We have all heard the motto ‘Prepare for the worst and hope for the best’ – it is something that we all live by, whether its preparing our homes for bad weather or making sure storm dams are in place. However, what does it mean in terms of our finances. How do we prepare them and why do we need to have financial security in times of distress. In the midst of an emergency, our finances can be the last thing on our minds, but in reality they can also help us pull through, rebuild and make sure that we are secure during the initial emergency and in the aftermath. So, whatever your circumstances, here are some top tips to help you prepare financially for an emergencies that may arise.

1. Try to save between 3 – 6 months worth of wages

When considering how much money we should have saved, we are usually talking about saving for a purpose, a wedding or holiday, or saving for our later lives. We don’t often consider saving for large scale emergencies, but these are just as important in the unpredictability of life.

There are many small changes you can make to start your emergency savings plan today. These can be cutting out the lunch at work thus saving a small amount each day or ending your gym contract, saving that money and switching to exercising in the fresh air. Whatever way you choose there are small lifestyle choices that we make every day that cost money. The question is could that money be put to better use elsewhere?

If you want to start saving larger amounts each month, then it is important to set yourself a clearly defined budget. This will need to include incoming cash, outgoings and any debts you may have. There is no point in creating a financial crisis for yourself by saving more than you can afford, so budget carefully.

2. Finance in times of crisis

Of course, due to not knowing when emergencies are going to hit us, it is important to make sure that there are options available to us if we don’t have savings to back us up. The first thing to consider is getting your credit history checked – this is important in order to be able to see how healthy your credit is and will give you the options of finance that may be available to you.

If you have a good credit score, then you will have the options for many different loans and credit. However, if your score is very bad then you may be limited so having a look for payday loans or loans for people with bad credit may be the appropriate option for you. Be advised that loans of this nature are designed purely for times of financial emergency such as a house flood or an unexpected medical bill that will incur extra fees if not dealt with, so you need to make sure that there are no other finance options available to you. It is also important to get all the information on repayment and remember that this will need repaying in full or you could incur high interest fees. They are however, specifically designed to help and they are very useful in times of crisis.

3. Make sure your insurance is up to date

Making sure you have the right insurance is almost imperative when considering possible emergency eventualities, whether it’s flood, earthquake, auto or life. Each of these insurance types will offer you the peace of mind you will rely on in times of crisis. Essentially, you are buying a certain level of protection in the event of a catastrophic loss. If you know you live in a flood prone area, then do you have this covered by your insurance, and if so what does it cover you for? Make sure you get answers to all these questions and that you tailor your insurance to you area, home and lifestyle.

Any homeowner would agree with the fact that insurance is an absolute necessity today. It is a vital part of being an owner of a house, especially with all the risks that one is getting exposed to today, with regards to natural calamities and economical crunches. However, when it comes to home insurance, a lot of factors need to be carefully considered before making a decision. To determine which insurance policy is the best or pat, one needs to do a lot of research. We would, in this article, go through some of the information and tips on how to choose the right policy.

House Insurance Basics

Before choosing a home insurance policy, one needs to know what these policies usually cover.

Here are some of the basic things that house insurance generally tend to cover:

• Protection against accidental fire

• Covering the damages that can occur due to lightening strikes

• Coverage of damages due to explosions

• Coverage of the repair work that is needed if the home is vandalised due to riots or any other incident

• Protection against damages caused due to objects falling out of the sky

• Damage caused by natural calamities, such as hail, volcano and windstorms

• Malfunctioning of heat control systems

The above mentioned items are just some of the things that most of the home insurance policies tend to envelope.

Limitations of House Insurance Policies

While it may seem like home insurance is the best way to go, there are some limitations with these hedging contracts as well that one has to keep in mind before taking the plunge. For instance, any insurance policy will have a limit that depends upon the premium that the user pays every month. The limitations differ, depending upon the policy chosen and the value of the property being insured.

Also, care must be taken to see that the policy being chosen is based on the total cost of rebuilding the home in case of damages, and not based on the price of the existing home. This way, a buyer can actually have hopes of being covered by his or her policies, when or if the time comes to use them.

Types of Policies for House Insurance

In the United Kingdom alone, there are several home insurance policies to go for. However, a prospective homeowner must choose the policy depending on the home and its contents as well. Here are some tips on choosing the right home insurance policy:

• Online Home Insurance Quotes: Many home insurance providers offer generic quotations on their sites (for example, http://www.axainsurance.com), which can help the homeowner get an idea about the whole process. Not only does this help to formulate a well-informed decision, but it also helps to get a general idea of the amount of premium the homeowner will need to pay once the policy is selected.

• Using Home Insurance Comparison Websites: There are several home insurance websites out there on the Internet that can provide useful details about various plans offered by many different insurance companies. Many sites allow the users to compare the benefits and details of the policies, so as to choose the plan that best fits their requirements and budget.

• Choose a Home Insurance Plan based on the Situation: Just blindly choosing the first policy offered to the owner is not a good idea. Some insurance agencies offer such deals to entice the customers into making decisions that they may, in fact, regret at a later stage. After all, there could be a better deal available elsewhere that they could benefit from, instead of the one they end up going for.

As if we hadn’t already seen enough Biblical events this year, a plague of over 30 million locusts swarmed over Egypt’s cities and farms just three weeks before Passover begins. But put your apocalyptic fears to rest. This happens every year as part of the locusts’ natural migration pattern, though this year’s swarm is especially large. That doesn’t mean Egyptians aren’t freaked the heck out by millions of nasty bugs buzzing through the air at all hours of day and night, possibly descending upon the agriculture fields where they’re known to destroy entire crops, just like in the actual Passover story.

The crops are so far safe, Egyptian officials assured the public. As the plague made its way from the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia at the end of last week and this weekend, though, Egyptian Agricultural Minister Salah Abdel Moamen explained the situation to the country in a calmly worded statement. ”The current inspection teams at areas targeted by locusts did not witness swarms damaging a single inch of crop,” said Moamen. He added that the locusts are “sexually immature and do not depend on plants for energy since they mainly rely on fat stores.”

That said, these plages can be unpredictable. Egyptian officials didn’t expect the plague to pass by the country’s capital, until Sunday when the locusts unexpectedly arrived in Cairo. The government denied reports that the locusts had started devastating crops as well as a report from United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) that the Ministry of Agriculture cleared 11,000 hectares of land in an attempt to save the harvest. When they get hungry, a one-ton hoard of locusts can eat the same amount of food in one day as 2,500 humans, according to the UN. Egypt knows this too. Less than a decade ago, a plague of locusts nearly 40 miles wide swept over Egypt damaging crops at the majority of the country’s farms. That’s a picture of it, to the right.

Conflicting reports aside, Moamen insists that the government has everything under control. “Egyptian armed forces and the border guards are attempting to fight the swarm with the means at their disposal,” the agriculture minister said. “I ask the families living in the locust-plagued areas not to burn tires. This does not chase away the locusts, but only causes damage and could ignite large scale fires that would cost in lives.” Also, that smoke isn’t doing Egypt’s grandchildren any favors. Scientists anticipate that, as global warming worsens, plagues like this will also get worse.

The Ultimate Prepper’s Car Kit

When securing your property and belongings, paying attention to your vehicle is another important matter you should address fully. You never know when disaster will strike and therefore, having a survival kit stored safely in your vehicle could get you out of trouble should you need to use it. If you are a prepper, you may have already considered putting together a car survival kit but here is a checklist that will ensure you haven’t forgotten any of the essentials.

Many people keep a kit of some type in their car in case they break down, run out of fuel or get stuck in bad weather. If you have a basic emergency kit, you could already have a few of the pepper’s essentials that I am about to mention. These prepper essentials will help to get you or a friend out of trouble.

Food

If the worst should happen and you are stuck for a few days for whatever reason, you will need edible supplies to keep your energy levels up. The best type of food for storing in your boot in case of an emergency is chocolate bars, protein bars, biscuits, tins of tuna and energy drinks.

First Aid Kit

You may already have one of these in your vehicle but a basic kit should include plasters, pain killers, bandages, antiseptic cream and gauze.

Spare Clothing

Clean, dry clothing will always come in handy should disaster strike. You may have to walk to shelter and these garments could help to keep you or a friend dry. Waterproof jackets, trousers and walking socks will protect you from the elements and can be stored in your boot or under a seat with ease. Thermal underwear and tops could come in handy during the winter months.

Other Essentials

Preparing for the worst can be difficult as you are preparing for an unknown event but there are a number of essentials that will come in handy whether you should experience a natural disaster or an invasion. A sleeping bag will keep you warm and a fixed blade knife can help you when chopping food or cutting wire.

Remember, prepping is an ongoing project, if you are just starting out, it is wise to invest in these essentials over time to keep costs down. You can find an awesome range of Military Surplus gear online at RV Ops.

Subject: [Dtiquips] School Solution!

16 Dec 12

School Solution, from a Friend on the East Coast:

“We are a Jewish family, and all our minor children attend a Jewish elementary school. The school itself does its best to maintain a low profile, but, due to its academic excellence, its appearance and location are well known in the area.

We Jews, whether in Israel or here, are acutely aware of the continuing threat to us and our children, no matter where we live. It is not paranoia, as I’m not talking about ‘imagined’ threats, am I?

Because of our community’s ability to accurately comprehend threats and threat-levels, we have elected not to do what is currently common in this civilization: (1) pretend threats don’t exist, and (2) wager our lives on police arriving sometime before the last shot is fired.

So, this is what we’ve all agreed upon and instituted:

Each father, including me, is on a mandatory, rotating dutyschedule.

Each of us is thus ‘on-duty’ several days each month, all day. Yes, we have to take days off from work. We are posted in the back of each classroom, visibly armed with both an AR and a pistol. All our weapons are constantly loaded and ready, and can be plainly seen as such. Each child thus knows and understands that there is always a father, their own or that of one of one of their schoolmates, there with them in the classroom all the time, and he is able, willing, and committed to defending them with his life.

We consider this system the only logical and effective solution to our security challenges.

Again, it is as low-profile as we can reasonably make it, and from the outside, a casual observer can’t see any of this, but all of us, children, parents, teachers, and administrators know, and are thankful for, what we have put in place.

And, as you might say, we don’t care who likes it!”

Comment: Americans are responding to the latest mass-murder incident, not with cries for additional restrictions on our freedom, but by going out and buying guns! ARs, XCRs, PTRs, SIG/556s, Kalashnikovs, M1As, et al, as well as magazines and ammunition, are currently being bought-up so quickly, dealers can’t keep them in stock.

Even requiem anti-gun editorials are currently muted, as Americans are in no mood to be piously lectured, by media elitists and political gas-bags alike, that we are too stupid to own guns!

The Jewish Community, at least in the case described above, is smart enough to perceive real problems and come up with real solutions, not just the same old tired, fictitious, worthless fluff suggested by most politicians.

Good show, guys!

Hardening your Home

All that hard prepping work will be for nil if you are unable to adequately protect your homestead. Depending on your particular resources and current financial situation, there a number ways you can approach home security. Let’s take a look at three of them:

Safe room

A safe room, also known as a panic room (thanks to Jodie Foster), is a secure refuge within your home where you can hide during a home invasion, natural disaster or any other emergency situation. The easiest and most cost-effective way to create a safe room is to transform an existing room. You’ll want to choose an interior room, ideally without windows. Bathrooms are always well-suited for this function since they are pre-furnished with a toilet and running water.

Once you’ve chosen the appropriate room, you’ll want to replace the wooden door with the strongest, solid-core door (steel is optimal) you can afford. Once the door is installed, you’ll need to reinforce the door frame with a heavy metal doorjamb to help prevent any intruders from kicking the door open. Additionally, make sure to secure the door with a keyless Grade-1 deadbolt, which is the most durable lock as designated by the American National Standards Institute.

It’s also important to stock the safe room with basic survival supplies. This includes nonperishable food items (consider the kosher line of long-term storage foods mentioned by Josh on a previous post), a standard first-aid kit, a safe supply of water (one gallon per person per day, as recommended by the Red Cross), duct tape and most importantly, multiple communication devices.

Until the world as we know it comes to an end, it’s important to remember that a quality home alarm system should still be your first line of defense. You’ll find that today’s premier home security providers offer comprehensive protection for a price that most families can afford. ADT, for example, is currently advertising home monitoring for around $9 per week on their website. Check out http://www.securitychoice.com to learn more.

Firearm

Obviously, every prepper will need to put a lot of consideration into self-defense. If you choose to purchase a firearm, there are a number of options you can go with. Thus, it’s imperative that you carefully weigh all of your options. Handguns are the most obvious choice, given their size, convenience and ease of use. The .9mm, .45 ACP, .357 mag, .40 cal and .38 special are among the most popular self-defense handguns. Whatever handgun you choose, make sure you are thoroughly familiar with how to use it. Remember, a handgun can only be effective if the person firing it know what they’re doing.

Canine

Humans and canines have carried on a symbiotic relationship for centuries. There’s no reason that alliance can’t continue after TEOTWAWKI. From hunting to companionship, dogs can help us sustain livability in a number of ways. In terms of home security, dogs can typically sense danger long before us humans can. Not to mention, a good guard dog (i.e. German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher) will oftentimes be intimidating enough to frighten off any would-be intruder.

If you do own a dog, keep in mind that you won’t be able to drive down to the local pet foods store during a doomsday scenario. You’ll have to prepare the food for your four-legged friend yourself, and, just like us humans, canines require a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals. Rice is always a good option because it’s sustainable, easy to digest and rich in carbohydrates. You’ll also want to include vegetables (green beans, carrots or peas) and meat (chicken, beef or tuna) in your dog’s daily meals.

American Jews have historically supported gun control, and some of the country’s most powerful Jews have been at the fore- front of recent gun control legislation and banning private fire- arms. New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Senator Charles Schumer are among the country’s biggest antigun activists, and Jewish lawmakers in the Senate and the House were among the first to introduce new gun control legislation following the De- cember 14 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, that took the lives of 20 students and six educators. So you might be surprised to discover that your frum neighbor owns a gun and even goes to weekly target practice.

For many, the idea of private citizens carrying guns conjures up the image of the Old West, a cowboy with dusty spurs on his boots and a six-shooter riding low on his hip, preparing for a showdown with the outlaws. Or perhaps a ragged band of Colo- nial militiamen, clutching their muskets against the onslaught of British redcoats.

But according to the NRA, an estimated 40 percent of US households have guns, with about 45 million privately owned firearms. And no, not all of those are in the Wild West. Some of those gun owners have a Glock tucked into the holster under their tallis, while others keep their rifles locked in the safe be- hind their seforim shelves.

Everyone wants to achieve a society that is safe and nonvio- lent, but the gun control debate has highlighted the disparity in opinions of how to achieve that goal. Favi, an insurance agent from Monsey, is a vocal supporter of gun ownership. He be- lieves that when law-abiding people own guns it enhances not only their own personal security but the security of society at large. He finds support for his view in halachah. “The halachah is clear that if someone is coming to kill you, you are obligated to defend yourself, and use lethal force if necessary. It stands to reason that you are required to have the tools with which to do that in order to fulfill the obligation.”

Favi was picking up his daughter from the mall late one afternoon at dusk and was parked at the far end of a virtually empty parking lot. When he saw some suspicious characters lurking near his car, he was glad that he had his weapon with him. “I’m a mid- dle-aged guy who’s five feet, five inches and couldn’t punch his way out of a paper bag,” Favi relates. “Plus my daughter was with me, so I couldn’t even run. What chance would I have against two hulking thugs? Knowing I had the ability to defend myself and my child when I walked past made me feel safer. I can’t tell you how relieved I was when finally, un- der threat of their hostile stares, we got into the car and left without incident. But it drove home the point to me how much I would rather have a gun and not need it than need it and not have it.”

In the wake of Sandy Hook, President Obama announced his three-pronged, $500 million package of gun control measures, which will mean stricter background checks

for all gun buyers including screening for a criminal record, mental illness, or other reasons to block the purchase of a gun — not only for those buying from federally licensed dealers, as is now the law (although universal background checks wouldn’t have stopped the mass shootings at Sandy Hook, where the dis- turbed assailant took the licensed guns from his mother and then murdered her). “Go to a gun show and you’ll see individuals who ad- vertise: ‘No background check, no questions asked, cash and carry.’ They don’t want to know anything,” gun policy researcher Daniel Webster told the Wall Street Journal.

The plan also includes a ban on semiauto- matic rifles and high-capacity ammunition magazines; improvements in school safety, including putting 1,000 police officers in schools; and bolstering mental health care by training more health professionals to deal with young people who may be at risk.

On a state level, Democratic leaders in California introduced legislation that would mandate more extensive background checks and one-year permits for anyone buying am- munition. Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Democrat-led New York state assembly have already passed a measure that includes the most restrictive gun laws in the nation.

All this legislation worries gun owners across America, who keep firearms in the interest of both self-defense and the primary American right to bear arms, as protected by the Second Amendment. Jewish gun owners say they have additional reasons to keep a weapon. Citing historical incidents of anti- Semitism, from the Holocaust to the more recent Crown Heights and LA riots, many religious gun owners feel a Jew has an obli- gation to own a weapon, because it is more likely he will be attacked in times of politi- cal or civil unrest. The JPFO (Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership) even claims that the Gun Control Act of 1968 — enacted when gun control became a hot- button issue following the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King — was lifted almost verbatim from the Nazi Weapons Law of 1938 that disarmed Ger- man citizens, putting them at the mercy of the ruling power.

What’s That On Your Hip? In Ortho- dox Jewish circles, owning a firearm some- times raises eyebrows, and many religious gun owners choose to remain anonymous. Yaakov, an electrician who lives in Lake- wood, says that when friends found out he owns a gun, they would come over to him in shul peppering him with questions: “What kind of gun do you own?” “Can I see it?” “Can I touch it?”

And although some people might enjoy the status of advertising their firearm, there is a general safety concern that publicizing one’s gun collection is an invitation to thieves to break in and carry off those weapons. In fact, a gun safe was among the possessions stolen in a home burglary in White Plains, New York. The 70-year-old owner was one

of 44,000 gun permit holders whose names and addresses were published by a New York newspaper. State senator Greg Ball, who said the paper created “a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs,” immediately intro- duced a new bill that would ban such infor- mation disclosures.

Although most gun owners have never had the occasion to draw or fire their weapons — and most of them pray they never will — Yaakov’s pistol came in handy one night. “I woke up to a noise and I thought at first that it was one of my kids. Then I realized that someone was trying to break open the lock on our front door.” After sending his wife to the children’s room and instructing her to call 911, Yaakov unlocked his gun and crept downstairs to the intruder, who had moved around to the back of the house.

While safety precautions recommend that one should not confront an intruder, Yaakov had recently heard of a friend in Lakewood who had been assaulted by armed thieves in his own home, and he was taking no chances.

“I came face-to-face with the guy by the back door. I saw him through the glass, try- ing to open the door. I just held up my gun and yelled ‘Freeze!’ ”

Moments later the police arrived and took the intruder into custody.

Yaakov admits that a gun in the hands of the wrong person can be dangerous, but so can so many other tools. “A hammer or a chain saw can also cause a lot of damage. Any tool can be used for the wrong reason, but the gun itself is not inherently bad.” And although he’s not supporting a people’s re- volt, he is adamant about the fundamental democratic right of the people to bear arms. “Should the government have guns and not the people? Do we need a bigger and stron- ger government to take care of us? Or should we have the right to take responsibility and defend ourselves?”
Avraham, a data processor from Monsey and a handgun owner, is

adamant that protecting oneself is the individual’s responsibility. “The police force can’t be everywhere at once,” Avraham maintains. “And remember, deviant crimes are committed by deviants. Stricter gun laws are not going to stop them.”

The recent shooting sprees, he notes, have occurred in gun-free zones because there was no one to stop the criminal. “Law enforcement is there to arrest the criminals after the crime. Of course your guns should be kept in a locked and secure place. But they should be quickly accessible if you need them. I prefer to take my safety into my own hands.”

Chaim, a salesman from Cleveland, has a permit to carry a concealed weapon. He carries his gun in a holster in the small of his back, under his jacket.

“There’s a certain comfort level in carrying a weapon,” Chaim com- ments. “It makes me feel safer, and it helps my neighbors too.” He says that although his neighborhood is relatively secure, there are some undesirable elements just a few blocks from his home, and a thief is less likely to break into a home when there’s a possibility he could get shot. As NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said after the Newtown massacre: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

David, a gun owner from Baltimore who is a yeshivah graduate and practicing attorney, says it is a mistake to think that making a law will create a new reality. “The guns are already out there, and creating a law banning guns will not cause them to disappear.”

Josh Wander, a native and resident of Pennsylvania who attended Mir before participating in the Israeli army’s yeshivah-plus-service hesder program, is a certified NRA firearms instructor. He is also the founder of “Jewish Preppers,” an organization that educates and en- courages Jews in disaster preparedness. Josh views personal safety and preparedness as imperative for any Jew.

“We may live in a civil society,” Josh says without wanting to sound hysterical, “and people in the US act politely to each other. But they said the same thing about Germany in the 1930s.” The right to bear arms, he said, is not just about protection from thieves. The founding fathers also wanted to ensure protection from a government that could turn tyrannical.

While Josh’s yarmulke makes him stand out at gun shows — and Jews are generally known to fall out on the liberal end of the gun control debate — he doesn’t feel that he’s treated any worse for it. “Once the gun sales- men see my knowledge and experience, they are very respectful,” Josh says.

Gun rights supporters claim that every limitation on firearms has failed to produce any reduction in violent crimes, and that the assault weapon ban is actually just “feel-good legislation,” a confusion of terms aimed at as- suaging the spirit of a frightened nation. They point to Britain and Australia as examples of countries where guns have been banned, but

the crime rate has risen. There are already millions of guns out there, and a thug, they say, is going to ignore the new gun laws when staking out an unarmed victim.

But those on the other side are perplexed. Why can’t gun rights supporters see the wis- dom of this common sense regulation, such as outlawing guns capable of spraying a hun- dred bullets at a time without reloading, they ask? Why would anyone support personal ownership of automatic weapons?

Perhaps the reason the “gun nuts” are in such an uproar about a seemingly logical piece of legislation — in addition to their fear that it spells the beginning of a disarmed society — is in the obfuscation of terms. Since 1934, no individual can own automatic weapons (which fire more than one bullet per trigger pull) except for a specific few with certain

federal licenses. The assault weapon ban does not address SWAT team-style assault rifles and machine guns, but actually ad- dresses semiautomatic weapons such as the popular AR-15 rifle, which fires just one round per trigger pull. Although it reloads automatically, it doesn’t fire until the trig- ger is pressed again — and most revolvers and pistols do the same.

Target Practice Owning a firearm doesn’t help if you aren’t proficient in its use. It could even be turned against you. That’s why Al, a retired salesman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who wears a cowboy hat and spends vacations in Isra- el learning Torah, is constantly pushing himself to gain a higher level of exper- tise.

“Shooting requires a great deal of concen- tration, muscle control and development, and hand-eye coordination,” he says. He encour- ages gun owners to go to the shooting range as often as they can to improve their skill. Al himself is an expert archer and marksman. “Like any other activity, the more practice you get, the more skill you develop. And it feels great to be able to score better and better.”

When a few of Al’s friends became interest- ed in shooting, they created the “Shaloshoot- ers,” a shomer Shabbos gun club. They meet at the shooting range on Motzaei Shabbos or Sunday afternoons to practice skeet shoot- ing, an exercise in marksmanship in which participants fire shotguns at clay disks that are launched into the air.

The decision to own a gun may be a per- sonal one, undertaken after consulting safety experts and perhaps one’s rav, but how can a man with a family conscionably bring such a lethal weapon into his home? And once it’s there, what does he tell his children?

Every father handles the situation accord- ing to his wisdom, and Al says that once he felt his children were old enough, he sat them down and actually taught them about weap- ons. “I took them shooting and taught them how to clean and care for guns. I showed them how to have respect for their tools.”

Favi says that if your kids know you have a firearm in the house, you need to satisfy their curiosity about it. “When my children were younger, I kept my gun locked up, but would take it out to show it to them whenever they asked. It was never treated as something for- bidden. And when they were old enough, I took them to the range to go shooting with me.”

Detractors of keeping a gun at home cite lists of accidents that occur when children find or want to experiment with their par- ents’ weapons. In the US, over 500 children die annually from accidental gunshots. Some shoot themselves, while others kill friends or siblings after discovering a gun. Ameri- cans own millions of firearms, and a recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found more than 1.7 million children live in homes with loaded and unlocked guns. Furthermore, a study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine found 39 percent of kids knew where their parents’ guns were stored, while 22 percent said they had handled the weapons despite adults’ warnings to stay away. What’s more, age was not a factor in whether children had played with the guns — 5-year-olds were just as likely to report doing so as teenagers.

The biggest mistake parents make is as- suming their child doesn’t know where the gun is in the house, according to the Harvard Injury Control Research Center. If they know there is a firearm at home, chances are good that they’ll find it and maybe even experi- ment with it. The center gives some sensible tips for parents who feel they need to keep a gun at home: don’t keep the gun loaded; store the ammunition in a locked safe and carry the key with you at all times; and ask

the parents of your children’s friends if they keep guns at home and if kids will be playing where they’re stored.

Favi says that allowing children to see and handle a weapon actually removes the mys- tique surrounding guns and fosters a sense of responsibility. “Since they can access it whenever they ask permission, and learn about and understand a firearm’s potential for destruction if used irresponsibly, they don’t have the urge to try to unlock it or ex- periment on their own.”

The Orthodox community in general shies away from violence, and many parents do not allow their children to play with cap guns or water pistols. Are gun owners undoing all this and instead glorifying weapons?

Josh Wander does not allow his children to play with toy guns, but he does teach them about his own weapons. “Children should un- derstand that a gun is a deadly weapon and must be treated with reverence. If they’re not allowed to play with toy guns, it makes it clear that guns are not recreational.” The real problem, he says, is that guns are all over the media and are looked upon as some kind of adult toy, and it would make more sense to ad- dress cultural issues that lead to gun crimes, such as violent video games and movies. “When kids play video games, they become accustomed to pulling the trigger on another person,” he said. Or, as gun rights supporters say, “Guns don’t kill, people do.” —

‘The Purpose of Our Organization Is Plain and Simple: To Destroy Gun Control’ — Meet the Jewish Group Behind That Mantra

Jan. 28, 2013 11:10am Madeleine Morgenstern

David Bendory is not your typical Orthodox Jewish rabbi.

To start, he’s a certified National Rifle Association instructor. He takes congregants to the firing range, and he believes every Jew should know how to use a gun.

Bendory, 45, is the rabbinic director of Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, a Wisconsin-based, 5,700-member strong nonprofit organization that bills itself as an “educational civil rights organization” with one goal: end gun control.

“The purpose of our organization is plain and simple: to destroy gun control. Gun control is poison, that simple,” executive director Charles Heller, who is responsible for day-to-day decisions, told TheBlaze.

JPFO, as the organization is known, put out books and DVDs on the origins of gun control, including a film called “No Guns for Jews” which “documents the history of arms control against the Jewish people,” Heller said. Among other things, JPFO holds that the Gun Control Act of 1968 was taken almost entirely from Nazi-era weapons law, and it sells posters and bumper stickers bearing the Internet-famous slogan, “All in favor of gun control, raise your right hand” – complete with an image of Hitler in the Nazi salute.

Bendory’s role as rabbinic director is to ensure that JPFO stays true to Jewish principles. He believes self-defense – and with it, the freedom to own guns – is an inherently Jewish value.

“God has given you the precious gift of life, and just like any precious gift, you have the responsibility to care for that and treat it with the proper respect,” Bendory told TheBlaze. “The Talmud has a teaching that if someone is coming to killing you, strike him down first. That effectively means that while initiating violence is not ever an appropriate thing to do, violence when used in defense of self is not only righteous, but a required responsibility.”

The Essex County, N.J. rabbi estimates he’s introduced about 180 Jews to shooting. One reason he thinks every Jewish person should have a working knowledge of firearms is simple: history.

“I think that given Jewish history, I think every Jew should know how to use a firearm. It’s just a reality,” Bendory said. “I’m not saying every Jew should be a gun owner or a Second Amendment advocate, but Jews should know how to shoot a gun…that’s a skill that every Jew should have.”

Bendory himself grew up in southern New Jersey, in a “pretty typical liberal Jewish Democratic home, where gun control was a given.”

“We weren’t allowed to play with guns as kids, we weren’t allowed to play cops and robbers,” he said.

He began questioning that during his first trip to Israel, the first time he saw an actual firearm in the arms of an Israeli soldier.

“[I said] wow, look at all these people with guns to protect me and these are Jews,” Bendory said. “These are Jews protecting other Jews.”

But it was the 2008 Mumbai attacks that turned him into a public advocate for firearm training, when Islamic terrorists murdered more than 150 people in a three-day rampage, including specifically seeking out the local Orthodox Chabad-Lubavitch house and killing the rabbi and his wife.

“When I saw that, and when I saw how many Jews put their heads in the sand following that one, I said I’ve got to be more public on this issue,” Bendory said.

He has an idea why American Jews seem particularly hesitant about firearms, and — though little polling exists on the subject — seem to favor legislation restricting them.

“We as Jews believe in the messianic age, we don’t want to live in a world where guns are necessary, so, quite foolishly, there are many Jews who close their eyes to the necessity,” he said.

Heller, JPFO’s executive director, put it another way: “Jews tend to be legalistic…we tend to be law obeyers and tend to be reliers on law rather than rely on force, that’s just the way we’re oriented.”

Another part of it is that there just isn’t a “Jewish gun culture.”

“They have no index, they have no way of knowing about guns and unless they’re in military service or they grow up maybe in scouting, they have no experience of the gun culture,” Heller said. “They believe what they see on television and it’s just insane. It’s not rational to believe that limiting guns is a measure of your safety.”

In The Minority

It’s safe to say that Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership is firmly in the minority among Jewish organizations in America. After the Newtown, Conn. massacre, many of the country’s most prominent Jewish groups, including the Orthodox Union and the Conservative movement’s Rabbinical Assembly, came out strongly in favor of President Barack Obama’s new gun control proposals.

“As a community that has experienced mass violence, we appreciate the careful consideration that is being given to this issue,” Rabbi Steve Gutow, president of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, said in a statement earlier this month. “It is a national priority and we must keep up the momentum.”

Rachel Laser, deputy director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, told TheBlaze that the majority of American Jews unquestionably support gun control.

“The Jewish community wants to protect lives,” Laser said. “There’s this Jewish expression, ‘B’tzelem Elohim,’ which is that we’re all created in the image of God …we feel like there are Jewish texts and traditions that compel us to help prevent this loss of life that’s happening everywhere from the Newtowns to the streets of Chicago.”

There’s another issue, which is invoking the Holocaust and Nazi rule to make a point about gun control. The Anti-Defamation League released a statement last week calling on gun control legislation opponents to “stop using references to Hitler and the Nazis,” calling them “historically inaccurate and offensive.”

“The idea that supporters of gun control are doing something akin to what Hitler’s Germany did to strip citizens of guns in the run-up to the Second World War is historically inaccurate and offensive, especially to Holocaust survivors and their families,” Anti-Defamation League Director Abraham Foxman said.

There’s legitimate academic criticism about the gun control-Nazi regime argument. In a 2004 paper that specifically criticized JPFO, Bernard Harcourt of the University of Chicago Law School wrote: “The Nazis sought to disarm and kill the Jewish population. Their treatment of Jewish persons is, in this sense, orthogonal to their gun-control views.”

“Nevertheless, if forced to take a position, it seems that the Nazis were relatively more pro-gun than the predecessor Weimar Republic, as evidenced by the overall relaxation of the laws regulating the acquisition, transfer and carrying of firearms reflected in the 1938 Nazi gun laws,” Harcourt wrote.

JPFO is unfazed by the criticism, insisting they’ve done their research and remain steadfast in their mission to abolish gun control.

”Very Surprised”

Heller said JPFO’s main focus right now is to grow its membership. The 24-year-old organization has increased from 3,800 members to 5,700 in just the year and a half that he’s been at the helm.

And for Bendory, bringing two, sometimes very disparate, worlds together is a unique task. When people, especially Jews, are surprised to hear he’s an Orthodox rabbi and an NRA instructor, he offers to bring them to the range so they can see firsthand how the other gun owners react to him.

“There’s this stereotype of redneck, anti-Semitic gun owners,” Bendory said. “Most people are very surprised by what they’ve found.”

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/01/28/this-orthodox-jewish-rabbi-is-an-nra-instructor-who-believes-jews-should-know-how-to-shoot-a-gun/
